Father and Son
In John chapter 14, Jesus explained to his disciples that all He had shown them and all that He had done while with them was for and about the Father. Jesus was indeed the “way, the truth and the life.” We shall know the Father through Jesus, and only through Him.
Philip, the always practical disciple, decided to suggest a simpler and certainly quicker method for introducing us to the Father. He replied to Jesus’ comments with, “show us the Father and that will be enough.” I can imagine Jesus just staring at Philip and shaking His head. Ok Philip, FIRST: Jesus lived to show the Father. All He did was according to the Father. Come on, Philip! And SECOND: Enough for what? If seeing the Son is not enough, how is seeing the Father going to be enough? We will see the Father and, WALA, we will be followers forever? Wrong.
Lucifer was the angel of light and lived in the presence of the Father. This did not stop him from rebelling, the worst decision of all, ever. Adam, not far behind Lucifer, saw the Father and walked with Him in the garden. We all know how that went. Moses sat in the Father’s presence on the mountain top and still disobediently struck the rock. It is not enough to see the Father.
You must know the Father. This is what Jesus did for us. His humble service to the Father and His ultimate sacrifice for us has opened the way for us to know the Father. It is why Jesus came and it is what He accomplished.
