Dirty Undies

On a recent trip we were stranded and unable to get home due to weather conditions.  Our exile made our adventure 3 days longer than planned.  Now, being the astute traveler I am, I had prepared for the possibility of an extended stay.  Unfortunately I was not astute enough to know that the extension of our trip would make it twice the planned length of time.  Naturally this put me in a bit of a dilemma.

I was good on shirts and pants.  Even my socks held out until the end.  But my underwear, well that was a different story.  I had brought only one additional pair of skivvies.  I was short with my available briefs.  I faced the ultimate of all travelers’ decisions - go commando or wear dirty undies.

As I prepared for my return trip home, I contemplated my course of action and came up with the only sensible thing to do… wear dirty undies.  I know, I know!  I hated it too.  You commando freaks can keep your no underwear, sinful lifestyle to yourselves.  Go commando and next thing you know you got a tattoo, doing drugs…  Oh, it is a slippery slope.  I would have none of it.

Now, as soon as I sat my backside in the airplane seat the spiritual relevance of the occasion came to me.  Dirty Undies with clean pants are not really desirable!   I know!  It’s so deep!  But seriously, I would rather have clean underwear and dirty pants than the opposite.  Of course it is best to have both clean undies and pants.  But when circumstances push you to it, keep your undies clean!

Likewise, it is so much better to have the “inside” stuff right in our life rather than the outside.  When it comes to life, I seem to run around with dirty drawers while showing off my nice clean pants.  That is Messed Up!  Time and effort should be placed on keeping my spiritual life (read undies) clean.  I should concentrate on my spiritual health rather than my physical appearance.  Of course, it would be best to have my spiritual and physical selves in order, but when circumstances push me to it... you get the idea.

In the book of Mark, Jesus says “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”  Seems Jesus thought clean undies were more important as well.
