Series on Weed - 1

He often spoke in parables in order to fulfill the prophecies. The result was a teaching that needed enlightenment - not in the form of smarts, but in the form of faith. One had to receive the parable from faith in order to understand what it meant. This series will dissect one of these parables.

The kingdom of heaven is like what? Like “a man who sowed good seed in his field”. Who is this man and what is good seed? The man is “the Son of Man” (vs 37) and the seeds are the people of God’s kingdom (vs 38). The field is the world (vs 38).

So in this first installment on Weed, we have the Son of Man “sowing” the people of God’s kingdom into the world. The action described by this statement is an intentional placing of God’s children into the world. A person does not accidentally sow seed.

It is the Son of Man, also known as Jesus Christ, who does this parabolized sowing of God’s people. Jesus is given the duty of placing the good seed in the world. Why? This duty is given by right of sacrifice. Jesus gave Himself as a sacrifice to save us all. Because of His sacrifice He has obtained the right to our lives (Revelation 5). Jesus has made us a “kingdom” to “reign on the earth”.

Before Jesus, we were simply God’s creation. But through Jesus we are now God’s children - a kingdom and priesthood to God, our King. In this parable, Jesus was foretelling the result of a sacrifice that He had yet to make. His purchase of our salvation was yet to come as He stood before the listeners, but the result was inevitable. Jesus would become the man to sow good seed.

And where was it that He would plant that good seed? It was going to happen in “his field”. The world is that field and it is His. Make no mistake in assuming differently. The world we live in is Jesus’ world. We will talk in a later installment on the reasons why the world we live in is not one that we would believe Jesus possesses. Suffice it to say, the owner of the field is putting up with some stuff on purpose.

Now, the important question for you is - are you a good seed? The “good seed” is explained as the people of God’s kingdom. Are you a person of God’s kingdom?

 Matthew 13:24

Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field."
