Searching Depths

Our God is amazing!  He is so amazing in fact that He gave us His Spirit so that we might have a helping hand when trying to understand His ways.  The truth is that without the Spirit, our feeble minds and limited understanding would have absolutely no capacity to understand even the most elementary aspects of the Almighty and His purposes.

The Apostle Paul gives enlightenment on this subject in his first letter to the Corinthians.  While discussing the wisdom of God and the lack of it in the “rulers of this age”, Paul delves into the subject of the Spirit of God and lays out for us an awesome truth.  Paul explains that it is God who has revealed to us those things which in the past were said to have been “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined”.  The revelation of these things, the things “prepared for those who love him [God]”, was accomplished “through the Spirit.” (2:10) According to Paul, God decided that the things which at one time were not experienced, nor understood, or even imagined should be revealed to His people, those redeemed through the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ.

To be absolutely certain the reader would grasp his meaning, Paul states in verse 10b, “For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”  In other words, the unfathomable depths of God’s nature and will are searched out by His Spirit like a research submarine searching the ocean’s bottom floor.  Like Mr. Lewis and Mr. Clark searching out the unknown territories of the West, the Spirit explores the person of God, His actions, His Words, even the very thoughts of the Creator of all things are searched out by the Holy Spirit.

Why would God open such exploration into His being?  Why would He allow such “depths” to be searched?  It is for you and me.

As Paul says in verse 11 of the same epistle, “who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person?”  It is God’s Spirit who knows and understands and even digs deeper into the omnipotent person of God Himself to give understanding to God’s children about who God is and what He does and why He does it.  “That we might understand the things freely given to us by God.” (vs 12)  God has initiated the greatest of all explorations - the search for who He is.  He has organized the search party - His Spirit.  And He has ordained the benefactors of this great exploration - you and me and all those who are called according to His purpose.  Praise be to God for His grace and mercy in allowing us, simple creatures, to have insight by the power of His Spirit, into the depths of Who He is and Whose we are through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
