Questioning God
This is a psalm of desperate questions. The psalmist urgently asks God Almighty, “How long?” How long before God blesses, saves, protects, and shows His love for the author?
How long? How long? How long?
At times, David appears disrespectful, an insolent brat demanding a response from his father. In verse three, the king of Israel tells the Creator of all things, “Look on me and answer.” What?! Know your place, David, and remember whom you are speaking to.
But David acknowledges why his inquiry is so vigorous. The psalmist refers to God’s “unfailing love” and His “salvation.” David praises the Lord and testifies to God’s goodness in his own life.
When a person questions God’s speed in moving to help, that person’s relationship with God may be impugned. But the questioning itself implies the person’s reliance on God, their belief that the Almighty is listening, and the conviction that the One to whom they are speaking has the power to act.
