Renowned Faith

The faith of the Thessalonians was known everywhere.

The faith of the Thessalonians was renowned throughout Asia Minor and the other provinces Paul ministered.

The early church of Thessalonica had faith that was known. In fact, according to the Apostle Paul, the faith of this church was known "everywhere." Paul would know how far and wide the knowledge of the Thessalonian faith had traveled since he was a missionary to Asia Minor. Paul specifically notes that the "believers in Macedonia and Achaia" had followed the Thessalonians' example of faith in God. So what made the church in Thessalonica so well known and so potent in faith? Was it their religious practice? Their knowledge of theological doctrine? Was it their giving, ceremonies, music, or programs?

No. The acclaim regarding the faith of the Thessalonian church had nothing to do with religion, their building, the power of their ceremonies, or any other "churchiness." The faith of these believers was simply based on their imitation of Paul and those who originally ministered the gospel message to them. The church in Thessalonica received the gospel even in the "midst of severe suffering." These people were not fair-weather Christians. Their faith was well-founded and was a rock that held against the storms they encountered in their community.

Because of their strong faith in the middle of trials, Thessalonica was a "model" of works through faith, labor prompted by love, and endurance by hope to all believers in the other cities where Paul ministered. They took the message they heard, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and spread it far and wide. They ministered! They served!

The Thessalonians were not perfect people. Their background was full of idolatry. Their heritage was not in the knowledge of God. But they gave up their old ways when the gospel came to them. They dropped their worship of false gods to follow the One true God and His Son, Jesus Christ. This was their testimony, and it was renowned!

Religion will not produce fruit for the Kingdom of God. Ceremony, pomp, circumstance, and reciting of doctrine, while they may be good for the soul, are not a message of powerful faith to the nations in need. In trying times, believers need testimonies of people who stand and proclaim the Word of God despite tribulation. People like the believers of Thessalonica, who modeled Jesus's life even amid severe suffering. Let us strive to live a renowned faith in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit to the Glory of God our Father.
