Hold Loosely
I have been reading and hearing Bible scripture lately that reminds me to check my heart:
"Where your treasure is there will your heart will be also." (Matt 6:21)
"Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternity." (John 12:25)
"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them." (1 John 2:15)
These are challenging scriptures to hear if your heart has embraced the world. Frankly, I am a little scared by how my heart has received these, but God is good!
Christian, we must hold loosely to the things of this world. What do I mean? We cannot be in love with the things of this world: money in our bank account, the status our job gives us, the material stuff available, the screen of our phones and computers, the entertainment, and all the rest that exists in the world.
The goodness of God's creation was made for us to enjoy, but I am not referring to God's creation when writing about the world. I am writing about the systems created by man and the devil to take your heart away from God and enslave you to anything other than the One who made you and loves you. Remember that you are an eternal being. Everything around you, except the people, will pass away and not exist for eternity.
As eternal beings, our love should only be centered on eternal things. Why would you love and give your life for something that will last only a little while when you have all eternity to live? Love the eternal God! Fix your heart on His Kingdom and His Word, which will endure forever! These are worthy of your love.
