What are you looking at?
On a recent trip to NYC our family visited the Empire State Building. There being so many people visiting the city, I decided to keep my youngest son close to me at the top of this iconic structure. As I held my son, we looked out over the city and I pointed out other buildings, bridges and sights around the city. But my son’s eyes were always drawn to the boats traveling on the rivers.
I pointed out the Chrysler Building and he said, “look at that boat” pointing to a tender on the water. I pointed out central park, “loook at dat boat!” this time a ferry, then a barge, then a cruise ship. All the way around the building he only saw boats - the things of interest to him.
Then the Holy Spirit spoke. He showed me that often this is how we are with Him. God takes us to high points in our life and shows us all the wonders He has and will provide for us. But all we see is what interests us. He says “Daughter, look at my wonderful blessings in your life.” The reply, “Look at that money.” He says, “Son, look at the great peace I have brought to you.” “Look at that car, boat, house…”, replies the son.
How often we overlook the glories of God and the true blessings He has bestowed on us because our focus is captured by things of lesser consequence. Lord, help me to see what you are showing me! Help me to focus on your interests, not my own.
