They know Me. Do you?
Legion, the many demons, knew Jesus. No proclamation was made, no introduction given, but this horde of evil spirits that had taken up shop in the possessed man of the tombs in Gerasenes (Luke 8:30) knew before Whom they now stood.
How they knew Jesus:
They knew that Jesus was not good company for them. “What have you to do with us…” They knew Jesus showing up at their long lived party was a bad deal for them.
They knew Jesus’ name, the human name given to the Son of God. Legion, being eternal beings, knew the Son of God as the Glorious Creator of all things, the righteous God. But they referred to Him as “Jesus”. They knew the son of Man. By this we can infer an understanding of present times and present happenings. Jesus’ renown was spreading throughout the land of Israel and it appeared that the demons were keeping tabs.
They knew the Most High God, in fact, they had seen with their own eyes the glory of the Eternal King on the throne of Heaven. They may have ministered personally to Him. However, they chose the path of pride and arrogance against the Most High and thus suffered isolation from heaven and from their Creator.
Legion knew Jesus had greater authority than they had. Now, there was no other man on earth that these demons would have begged. We see in Mark 5 that the man possessed by Legion could not be tamed. These demons had no fear of man’s authority, but they knew Jesus had authority, not by man, but of God.
So what can we learn from Legion’s knowledge of Jesus? We can know that when evil work is at hand, Jesus will oppose it. We understand that Jesus is known to all beings. We can know that the Most High God is awesome in power and submits even the strongest of evil spirits. When demons come face to face with the power of their Creator, they are forced to beg for mercy.
